The Fairfield Store
in Fairfield, Virginia - near Lexington
The old frame and plaster building, built in the early 1900's, was most
recently the home of an antique business. Early black and white photos of
Fairfield show that it was originally a Texaco gas station, complete with
oversize Texaco star, old-timey gas pumps and even "his" and "hers"
outhouses (we've kept the outhouses for history's sake). Rt. 11 was, at that
time, a dirt road. The photo's reveal that along Rt. 11 there were hitching
posts for folks who were still using horses to traverse the Valley. Research
has revealed that the store was a local hang-out of sorts - where the area
hot-rodders met to swap stories and catch up on current events.
The store has been renovated and upgraded. It is approximately 1,200
square feet, has oak floors, plaster walls and 10 foot ceilings. Located in
the Shenandoah Valley in the village of Fairfield, just outside historic
Lexington, it is convenient to both Staunton and Lexington. Roanoke is less
than an hour's drive.
The village of Fairfield is rife with history. As Lexington is just minutes
up "the Great Wagon Road", confederate soldiers surely marched just in front
of the store on their way up North. Records show that the local militia who
fired the first shot at the battle of Gettysburg met just across the street.
Lexington is home to the Virginia Military Institute, Washington and Lee
University, Stonewall Jackson's house, the Virginia Horse Center and a large
number of historical sites. Hot Springs, the baths at Warm Springs, Goshen
Pass and Natural Bridge are all within easy driving distance. The property
is conveniently located five minutes from I-81, thirty minutes from I-64 and
a half hour from Roanoke. The neighborhood post office, elementary school,
churches and market are all within walking distance of the store.
The store is available as a long term rental for $500.00 per month.
