The Fairfield Store
in Fairfield, Virginia - near Lexington The old frame and plaster building, built in the early 1900's, was most recently the home of an antique business. Early black and white photos of Fairfield show that it was originally a Texaco gas station, complete with oversize Texaco star, old-timey gas pumps and even "his" and "hers" outhouses (we've kept the outhouses for history's sake). Rt. 11 was, at that time, a dirt road. The photo's reveal that along Rt. 11 there were hitching posts for folks who were still using horses to traverse the Valley. Research has revealed that the store was a local hang-out of sorts - where the area hot-rodders met to swap stories and catch up on current events. The store has been renovated and upgraded. It is approximately 1,200
square feet, has oak floors, plaster walls and 10 foot ceilings. Located in
the Shenandoah Valley in the village of Fairfield, just outside historic
Lexington, it is convenient to both Staunton and Lexington. Roanoke is less
than an hour's drive. |
