Just over
the next ridge there are miles of hiking trails, mountain biking trails and
trout streams that offer some of the best hiking and trout fishing in the
east. Five minutes away the Blue Ridge Parkway curves gently along the high
ridges and through the dark hollows and is a favorite destination for
wildlife watchers.
The Appalachian Trail, which crosses the mountain at Montebello, is easily
accessible for short day hikes such as Crabtree
Falls, the highest falls east of the Mississippi or Spy Rock, said to be a
lookout point for confederate soldiers. Children will love feeding the
fish at the Montebello State Trout Hatchery just up the road or fishing at
the stocked trout pond across from the Montebello Country Store.
Nelson County is also home to Earl
Hamner's "Waltons' Mountain", a popular tourist destination.
Canoeing, kayaking and tubing in any of a number
of pristine mountain streams provide a respite to the heat of the summer season
while forest paths offer wonderful stretches of trails perfect for
leisurely horseback rides.
You may want to experience the quiet awe of the cliffs at Goshen Pass or
tour the amazing shops and gardens at the Buffalo Springs Herb Farm or
their neighbor, Wades Mill.
A short distance down the Blue Ridge Parkway is Wintergreen, a world class
ski and golf resort that also offers full spa packages for those desiring
a bit of pampering and rejuvenation.
Spend a day in Staunton touring the English, Scots-Irish, German and
American farms at the Museum of American Frontier Culture or visit Woodrow
Wilson's birthplace. Take a carriage ride through the historic town of
Lexington, (home of Stonewall Jackson) a treasure trove for antique buffs
and history aficionados alike.
In short there are just too many things to do here in the Blue Ridge -
the challenge lies in deciding! |
