thoughts, happenings and adventures
at Three Sisters Cabin
May 25, 2005-I think we have enjoyed our several day retreat as much as any
other we have experienced. The secluded location is splendid for just being who
you are without pretense. One of the most romantic getaways ever. Every detail
of the cabin is well thought out. All of the modern conveniences but cleverly
camouflaged to fit the nineteenth century. We spent hours just taking in
the details and marveling at your creativity. We'll definitely come back again.
Gary and Marie, Dismal Swamp, Virginia
April 24, 2005-Wonderful, as always. Especially fun to see and hear the many
frogs in the pond in the back. - especially the huge bullfrog sunning himself on
the north edge of the pond. Sneak up quietly and you'll see him. Also, there is
a big American Bittern that hangs out there, eating frogs, I suppose. And the
horses in back love baby carrots. Was a new experience to sit in the hot tub in
a very cold downpour. Thanks to the Cashes for a great place.
James and Lori Herrick, Linville, Virginia
April 15-18, 2005-There is nothing like a visit to Three Sisters to recharge
your batteries and adjust your attitude. As always, we are leaving feeling
refreshed and rejuvenated. Many thanks, Catherine and Luther for this little
paradise you've created. Next time we come, we'll have a new baby in tow. Can't
wait to come again.

March 30 - 31, 2005-Thank you so much for such a great birthday surprise for my
husband. He really loved it! We were so impressed with the neatness and
cleanliness of your place. We especially loved your tasteful country decor. We
enjoyed our dinner at the Edelweiss Restaurant last night....delicious German
food! They gave us some helpful tips for our trip to Germany and Austria this
summer. We also got some nice photos of Crabtree Falls- gorgeous! Then we had a
wonderful, quiet, cozy evening playing the Andy Griffith trivia game in front of
the fire. Thanks again for a much needed getaway. God bless.

February 16-18, 2005-Pure Bliss!

28-30, 2003-My husband and I were married on December 27th 2003 and he wanted to
surprise me for our honeymoon. What a pleasant surprise this cabin was! It was
very sweet that he found a place that I was sure to love. Although our stay was
brief we will remember it always and hope to return someday. Thank you ever so
much!

21-23, 2003-O.K. So can we work out a deal, kind of like frequent flyer miles - come
three times get the fourth time free? No matter how often we come this place continues
to offer up unforeseen treasures. On our 2nd night here we spied the biggest
raccoon we have ever seen stealing seeds from the bird feeder out back. When he
discovered us he slowly ascended the tree stopping every now and then to peer
around the side of the tree to see if we had had the good sense to go away. For
the end of November the weather was surprisingly warm (in the 70's). The nights
were cool and the hot tub was a great way to relax after a fun filled day of
hiking. Even if we don't get that "free weekend" we'll be back. My husband says
it's a lot cheaper than therapy. Even the best of us need time away to get back
to a simpler lifestyle, rejuvenated and better able to withstand four teenage
sons :)

7-9, 2003-Another beautiful, peaceful weekend at the cabin - and definitely not the
last! Thank you for sharing the cabin, keeping it so comfortable, welcoming and
affordable! We got to witness the full lunar eclipse last night from the yard
and the return to the wood heated indoors was that much sweeter. This place is
just what we "city folk" need so thank you and we'll be back soon!

9, 2003-Singing and laughing by the fire. Watching the lunar eclipse and more stars
that I've seen for too long. So quiet. Thank you.

14-16, 2003-This was our third stay in four years and this place never loses its
charm. I love to photograph and I never seem to be at a loss for opportunities
here. It is a great place for four friends to just sit back, stoke the fire and
enjoy some great conversations and peaceful evenings. This trip took us to
Lexington - a wonderful town with plenty to see and do. We will return next year
and eagerly count the days.

23-26, 2003-Our reservations had been made a year in advance so we were full of
anticipation as we headed out for your incredibly picturesque mountain cabin. We
had read the description and looked at the snapshots a number of times on the
website, but once here and experiencing it first hand, I can tell you it far
surpassed our high expectations. Catherine and Luther the love you have poured
into this quaint home is evident in every room. We felt comfortably wrapped in
the warmth of rustic hospitality that seemed to span the years back in the
original German family. Each evening by the woodstove we wished the walls would
tell the amazing story of those who have passed before us. The autumn days we
enjoyed here were absolutely perfect ...clear and crisp with beautiful foliage.
From this lovely setting we watched the birds squirrels and chipmunks at the
feeder and fed apples to the horses. Our nine year old son Hunter, never knew
there was a TV (a secret we kept from him) but rather spent time at the little
creek bed and at night played board games, drew pictures in a tablet and read a
book. Yes, there is life beyond Game Boy! We hiked at Crabtree Falls and at Wig
Wam Falls on the Blue Ridge Parkway - and perhaps would have ventured to more
sites if we hadn't been drawn to the beauty and tranquility of the cabin. We
will treasure the memories and resolve to come back again soon. Many thanks, God
bless.

26-28, 2003-In the aftermath of Hurricane Isabel this peaceful cabin is what we
needed to restore our souls. We spent Saturday morning at Drumhellers' Orchard
for their apple butter festival - the most delicious apples and cider! In the
evening we walked up the road (Rt 686) and met Jo-Jo and his companions. Later
he joined us for dinner-such a good natured dog. The night was complete with a
show from mother nature-a thunderstorm. Such sweet music! Nothing smells better
that the woods after a rain. The cabin was all that we hoped it would be. It is
such a special place. We are sorry to be leaving so soon but are already
planning our next visit. Thank you Luther and Catherine. God bless.

14-18, 2003-We were here on our honeymoon. My husband loves log cabins and I came across
your web site. Although the pictures seem an accurate depiction, there was no
way to truly tell what an absolutely irresistible little treasure I had found.
Even though this is our first time here, we are calling this "our home away from
home", complete with a dog (Jo Jo the old neighborhood collie who shows up
occasionally) and all! We really don't want to leave, especially
since it looks like we will be meeting hurricane Isabel. Thank you so much for
providing us with one of our first but most special and unforgettable memories
of our new life together.

12-15, 2003-Once again it was easy to achieve the "drool phase" of relaxation.
Thanks and we'll be back for more next year.

June
28- July 4, 2003-Dear Catherine and Luther, Thank you for opening this lovely cabin
to us and to all who have come before us. After reading the journal entries it
is obvious that your guests have been quite satisfied with the cabin and it's
surroundings; the mountains, the wildlife, etc. Oh, and of course, Jo Jo (the
neighborhood collie). Jo Jo is very charming. We really enjoyed having him
around, he made us feel safe and protected. The cabin is a perfect blend of old
and new. It has been tastefully restored and decorated with many personal
touches making it feel like home. We especially liked all of the glass in the
kitchen and the bath. It's like inviting the outside in and makes you feel more
in touch with nature. This little cabin has a very calming effect. We have all
felt very relaxed and at peace here - miles from the hustle and bustle of daily
life. We will truly miss it, however, we will be back!!!

17-19, 2003-Our second visit to Three Sisters (11-2000) Fed apples to the horses over
the gate. Saw: birds, squirrels (a variety), chipmunk, rabbits, snake (over at
the falls not here!), doe and fawn, wild turkey, pheasants etc. The place is
delightful. Luther and Catherine are wonderful. Rest, peace, quiet, charming -
all of the adjectives you see reported (in the journal) the past few years. And
improvements too this time around. The Falls (Crabtree) were beautiful,
especially with the new, improved layout. Trout were beautiful. Luther's
assistant (at the Montebello Trout Hatchery) was extremely nice. Rained a couple of days but being here in the rain
is super. Thanks!

June
4-6, 2003-We found Three Sisters on the internet while searching for a place to
celebrate our daughter's graduation from Washington and Lee University. Because
of the number of family and friends attending, we needed somewhere to gather
afterward for lunch. A picnic luncheon appeared the only logical plan, so why
not rent a cabin with a yard? Catherine was gracious enough to allow us to do
this. All of the adjectives people have used to describe Three Sisters came to
mind: quaint, charming, cute, etc. When we arrived here it was all that and so
much more. Nestled in rhododendrons, it was above and beyond all expectations.
The decor and ambiance immediately made us feel that we had come home. And that
is the best thing about this home. During lunch three horses trotted down the
hill and grazed, our girls were further awed. Jo Jo (the visiting collie) can
testify that a good time was had by all. Our daughter remarked that "it was
magical." That really sums up our visit...it was magical and very special. This
is our new mountain home... we will be back.
~ Debbie and William Reisbeck, Newport News, Virginia
P.S. the hot tub was the perfect remedy to soothe feet and calves after the
emotions and hosting of our proudful day. Thank you, thank you, Catherine and
Luther.

Dear Luther and Catherine, This is our last night here, sad
to see it come. Words cannot describe what a blessing it was to find a place
like this. These last few weeks we have traversed D.C. and several historic
places in Virginia, all of it very nice but this last stop was a miracle
come true. A log cabin surrounded by woods on a mountaintop with no one in
site except the wonderful wildlife. What a great getaway from the daily rush
of life. Our kids are very close and we have enjoyed watching them
entertaining themselves, for example our son chopped wood and learned how to
start the fire in the woodstove and our daughter enjoyed picking wildflowers
and berries in the woods. Back to nature was great for the family.
Our time here was unlike any other we have had before. We had lots of laughs
together especially about the bathroom door and the squeaky antique beds.
The serenity here has captured our hearts and uplifted our spirits. You have
our deepest gratitude for this rare and unique experience. With our
sincerest thanks,
~ Michael, Nancy, Michelle and Gabriel Cannon, Key Largo,
Florida (p.s. we have a long drive home)

Wow, from the moment we drove up and saw the cabin my husband
and I knew we had found just the right place for our mountain getaway. There was
a fire in the woodstove for us upon our arrival. We entered and were absolutely
delighted! What a wonderful cabin, simply perfect. This is just what we have
been searching for. That night as we lay in bed looking at the stars through the
skylights, we made plans to return every year. I wonder how many people have
noticed that you can see the "Big Dipper" through the skylights? Marty and
Angie B.

As the other guests of this awesome log cabin before us, we felt
a wonderful transformation back in time...peaceful, cozy, quiet. My husband
surprised me with this "getaway" for a few days knowing my passion for antiques,
the great outdoors and hiking. Both of us needed a break from our hectic jobs,
schedules, kids, etc. This place is perfect! The immediate grounds of this
quaint cabin are perfectly simplistic to compliment the cabin itself. Does
everyone who visits it have the discussion we did: could we live like this
today, in a cabin and setting like this and leave behind all of the unnecessary
hassle in our lives? We've hiked Crabtree (once from the bottom halfway up and
once from the meadows halfway down). I'd love to see this cabin tucked away in a
snowfall or see it in the spring with the rhododendron in bloom. What a treasure
this little cabin in the woods is. Many thanks! Judy and Jeff Pierce, Old
Church, Hanover County Virginia

Life just doesn't get any better than this - your
serene hide-away! Samantha, David and I love the "Blue Mountains" with all of
their quiet beauty and a comfortable log cabin that's all ours to enjoy! We
hiked Crabtree Falls, dined at the Sugar Tree Inn, visited Wintergreen Resort
and devoured the best BBQ sandwiches @ the Blue Ridge Pig in Nellysford... We
have more to do and look forward to our return real soon! Warmest thanks,
Valerie A.

Dear Catherine,
Once again we have truly enjoyed the cabin. We brought our children with us.
They loved the loft. None of us want to leave the cabin, we just want to
move in. This is a great getaway. This time we made it to the living history
museum in Staunton. It was a great window into the lives of our ancestors.
Thank you for keeping this piece of history alive.
To those who follow: Please take care of this cabin, we want to come back
many, many times. Justin, Heather, Hallie and Shelby Hildreth, Jasper,
Michigan
